目的・概要

Please be aware that this course is offered by a visiting researcher.
The aim of this course is to allow students to develop an advanced
understanding of the linkages between politics, conflict and security in
sub-Saharan. The course will encourage students to think analytically
about the underlying forces shaping issues of peace, conflict, and
security of the African continent. No prior knowledge of Africa or African
politics is assumed. The course will explore, using various cases studies
different thematic issues that pertain to African conflict and security

Topics 

  • Theorizing African conflict and security
  • Explaining African conflicts: Beyond the Greed and Grievance debate Greed versus grievance
  • The nature of the Africa state system – the impact of quasi states (fragile state) on African conflict and security
  • Ethnic cleansing, mass murder and genocide – Rwanda and Darfur
  • Gender dimensions of conflicts – are women actors, perpetrators or victims of conflict? 
  • The African insecurity dilemma – Warlords, Transnational criminal networks, Refugees, Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) and Child Soldiers
  •  Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Intervention in Africa
  • Privatization of security - Warlords, Criminals, mercenaries and vigilantes
  • Conclusion- the evolving African peace and security architecture
