目的・概要

This course reviews changing debates on poverty in the field of international development and is intended to help you gain policy perspectives on poverty reduction. It does so by making connections between theory and practice and by examining poverty reduction tools used around the world.  

 

Intended learning goals

  • Understand the multi-dimensional nature of poverty
  • Understand the historical changes in the geography of global poverty
  • Understand the changing global strategies for poverty reduction
  • Understand global debates concerning the different types of poverty reduction tools used around the world

  • Different approaches to conceptualizing and measuring poverty 
  • The changing geography of poverty
  • Global debates about poverty reduction
  • Poverty reduction policy and practice  
     

Case studies:

  • Dairy projects, Afghanistan 
  • Community-based ecotourism project, Cambodia 
  • One Tambon One Product, Thailand
  • Income generation for vulnerable group development programme, Bangladesh 
  • Coconut growing communities, the Philippines 
  • Information Technology and rural communities, Western China

成績評価

An essay (70%) and classroom performance (30%).
Classroom performance will be assessed by the quality of contribution to classroom discussions.
